Ajloun is a place of holiness and history

Ajloun Governorate is considered an area for religious tourism par excellence, and it contains two Christian pilgrimage sites approved by the Vatican, namely the Shrine of the Prophet Elijah (Mar Elias) and the Shrine of Our Lady of the Mountain Anjara, in addition to Ajloun’s tourist and historical importance, ancient and modern.

Ajloun Governorate, which is 76 kilometers northwest of the capital, Amman, is characterized by various tourist attractions, and its most important landmark is the ancient Ajloun Castle, which has had the “Tele Freak” project since 2023. This allows tourists to see stunning views of Ajloun’s forests, mountains, and valleys.

Ajloun has a prominent place on the Jordanian tourism map, due to its geographical and commercial location. The Ajloun Mountains are the mountains of Gilead mentioned in the Bible, and are characterized by their mountainous nature of varying heights, picturesque terrain, and stock of dense trees and forests of larch, oaks, and pine, as well as their moderate weather in most months of the year.

In Ajloun, there are evidences of ancient and different civilizations. There are Byzantine churches, Islamic castles, and religious shrines. In the year 2000, the Vatican approved the Church of Saint Elias and the Church of Our Lady of the Mountain as sites for Christian pilgrimage. This was during the visit of His Holiness the late Pope John Paul II to Jordan in the same year.

The shrine of the Prophet Elijah (Saint Elias) is located northwest of Ajloun and is 900 meters above sea level. It has traces of a church from the Byzantine era on it. The visitor sees archaeological artifacts at this site and marble sculptures and small metal tools in the Ajloun Castle Museum

The day of the Christian pilgrimage to the “Saint Elias” shrine is set for July 20 of each year. The visitor sees the statue of Our Lady of the Mountain, carved in Italy and made of very hard acacia wood. It is covered with a layer of gypsum and is expected to be between 150 and 200 years old. It is held annually. On the third Friday of June, there is a celebration at the Shrine of the Virgin Mary, Our Lady of the Mountain

The tourist sites in Ajloun have infrastructure services for archaeological sites, and can be easily reached via buses, taxis, and apps at moderate prices.
