Jesus Christ and his pupils, and the Virgin Mary, are believed to have passed through Anjara in Gilead hills, resting in a cave there during the journey between Lake Tiberia and the 10 cities (Decapulis), and Bethany through Jordan and Jerusalem. The cave in Anjara remained a sacred place for pilgrims, and a church and a Mary shrine in the name of the Lady of the Mountain were recently constructed as one of five sites adopted by the Vatican for Christian pilgrimage in 2000.
The town of Anjara is located on the ancient Roman road from the Jordan Valley and bound east of Grasa (current Jerash), and was called Ongoing Eye. Over time, it became Anjara. This eye was a break at which users of the ancient Roman Road would stop and head to the Roman city of Jerash, one of the 10 cities.
As a result, the late Father Yusuf Naamat, a priest of the Latin Patriarchate, built the Mountain Lady's Shrine in honor of the Virgin Mary, because he considered that Jesus, his students, and the women including his mother had passed through it, and rested at the eye, like every crossing of the road towards Jerash. It is also Christian tradition that Christ gave preaching about the sacred secret of blessed marriage from this blessed area.
The name "Lady of the Mountain" dates back to the geographical nature of this shrine, the famous mountains of Gilead. In 1971 Father Naamat, then priest of the parish built a small cave of stones in which the Virgin Mary the Lady of the Mountain was placed. In 1989, the shrines were expanded to accommodate the largest number of visitors, and the number of visitors was constantly increasing. In the Year of the Great Jubilee, 2000, Pope John Paul II approved five pilgrimage places in Jordan, one of which was the Mountain Lady's Shrine.
The Virgin Lady of the Mountain represents a wonderful view of the clean heart carved on her chest, and she held the child Jesus in her arms, pointing a hand at his mother's heart, and another hand to heaven, which is considered a sign of Mrs. Mary's blessing. When the believer enters the shrine today, he sees two large halls covered by icons painted by an evangelical artist at the request of the word's embodied parents, symbolizing the pink rosary secrets. In the right hallway are the secrets of grief and the secrets of glory, and in the left hallway are the secrets of joy and the secrets of light.
Many consecutive works have been done to increase the shrine's capacity. In 2019, a complete renovation of the shrine and its front yard was carried out. Today, the Latin Church of the Kingdom brings back the day of pilgrimage to the Mary shrine on the 3rd Friday of June each year.
