Tell Mar Elias Monastery is a Christian pilgrimage site of
great importance and speciality, as the Orthodox Pilgrimage Day falls on August
2nd, and a celebration was held at the site of the archaeological shrine of Mar
Elias, the Prophet Elijah the Zealot, in Ajloun Governorate, where the place is
ancient and sacred.
The pilgrimage began with a divine mass headed by His
Eminence the Greek Orthodox Metropolitan of Jordan, Christoforos, who spoke
about the greatness of the site and its touristic, religious and historical
specialness.
In his sermon, he said that it is a great blessing to be in
this holy place, which was teeming with monastic life in the fourth and fifth
centuries AD, which is considered part of the identity of our holy country that
witnessed and witnesses to this day the divine concession for the salvation of
mankind. He continued his talk by saying that our presence today in the
homeland of the zealous prophet Elijah in Jordan, this prophet who loved the
true God 800 years before the divine incarnation, sends us with all the
prophets of the Old Testament and the patron saint of Jordan John the Baptist
and the saints of the New Testament so that we may care for the salvation of
our souls, purifying our hearts and thoughts free from confusion, drinking from
the spring of the holy fathers of the church. Since Mar Elias is a Christian
pilgrimage site, work is currently underway to restore and preserve the site,
as His Eminence Archbishop Christoforos, the Greek Orthodox Archbishop of
Jordan, signed a tripartite joint agreement between the Hashemite Kingdom of
Jordan, represented by the Jordanian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, and
the President of the European Center for Byzantine Archaeology in Greece. The
agreement stipulates the implementation of projects to prepare, protect,
preserve and enhance the archaeological site of Mar Elias, including the
restoration of the architectural remains of the site and the mosaic floors, and
work to improve and facilitate its visit, through teams specialized in this
field.
The site of Mar Elias in Ajloun Governorate in Jordan
constitutes the remains of two Roman churches. The smaller church, discovered
in 2001, dates back to the 4th and 5th centuries AD, while the large church,
discovered in 1999, dates back to the 6th century and is one of the largest
Roman churches in Jordan. The churches are distinguished by their marble
carvings and mosaic floors.
The name of Mar Elias goes back to the prophet of God Elijah
the Thespian, as indicated by the texts written in Greek on the mosaic
paintings there.
Tel Mar Elias witnesses an active tourism movement
throughout the year, and tourists come to it from all over the world to make
pilgrimages and take the blessing of the place and see the picturesque views
overlooking the western bank, a historical legacy and the sanctity of the place.
